The tour begins with a 3:30pm welcome meeting at Hotel Mitru where you can meet fellow travelers and the tour host. The host will verify travel insurance details and emergency contact information, and give a brief tour introduction. Then, it’s off on a sunset outing to Killi Killi, an outlook perched above the city, to take in Nuestra Señora de La Paz (“Our Lady of Peace”) as the sun sets behind the towering peaks that surround the city.

Getting to the hotel: Hotel airport shuttle will be prearranged based on scheduled arrival. Private transportation can be arranged for additional fee.

High altitude awareness: Go BIG recommends taking things slowly as your body acclimates to the high altitude – drink water and coca tea (known for its restorative properties), keep your exertion level low, eat carbs and eat lightly. Consult your physician BEFORE travel. See Tour FAQ for more.

Money: It is very difficult to get bolivianos in your home country. There are a currency exchange and an ATM at the airport. Credit cards can be used in larger cities with Visa being the most accepted; traveler’s checks are not recommended. US currency is the only foreign currency that is often accepted, but you should carry small bills with very little wear and absolutely no tears. See more in Tour FAQ.

A bit about La Paz:
– Founded in 1548 by the Spanish conquistador Alonso de Mendoza
– About 817K ppl and 1.8 million in the greater metropolitan area
– Subtropical highland climate with rainy summers (Dec to Mar)
– Highest capital city in the world (the constitutional capital is Sucre)

After breakfast, there are two options for the day:

Option 1: Tiwanaku & Lake Titicaca (10-12hrs departs at 7:30am) Take a van to the UNESCO site Tiwanaku, a pre-columbian settlement, for a private tour and time for exploration of the site and museums on your own. Then, off to visit many sites along the shores of Lake Titicaca before heading back to La Paz.

Option 2: Bike the North Yungas Road (8-10hrs departs at 6:30am) Take a shuttle bus to La Cumbre (15,250 feet) and ride mountain bike, often out of the clouds, through the beautiful valley past waterfalls, snow-capped mountains and cloud forests to the dense jungle in the valley. Snacks and informational stops along the way with your guides. All equipment (including helmets, gloves, knee & elbow pads, wind/rain pants & jacket) provided as are the full-suspension Kona bikes with hydraulic brakes. Enjoy a large buffet lunch, a pool and showers before heading back to La Paz by private bus.

Tiwanaku was once the capital of the pre-columbian Tiwanaku culture. It is one of the largest archaeological sites in South America (~4 km2). It dates back to around 800AD and had an estimated population of about twenty thousand people.

N. Yungas Road was built in 1930 by carving into the rock faces of the mountain which created sheer drops of 1,000+ feet off the shelf. It goes from 14,783 ft / 4,506 m to 5,003 ft / 1,525 m and is one of the longest continuous stretches of downhill road in the world. Some sections are only about 11 ft / 3 m wide, unpaved with no guardrails. Combine that with the often heavy rain and thick fog common to the area, and you can see how the road got its nickname: The World’s Most Dangerous Road. However, since a new road was built in 2007, the traffic has been greatly reduced and with it, the danger.

Enjoy an early morning breakfast, and then shuttle to the airport for a flight to Uyuni. Once arriving in Uyuni, the group will break up into smaller groups for the jeep over-landing excursion of the otherworldly salt flats and Altiplano (4 to 5 ppl per vehicle). Just outside of town, visit the train graveyard to explore the beautiful rusted remains of vintage trains. Then, it’s on to the salt flats where you will first see the operational salt mines and then on to “ojos de sal”, the bubbling salt plains, and the original salt hotel, now a visitor center. The tour continues to the “islands” in a sea of salt. First, Isla del Pescado (Fish Island) which is covered in giant cacti – some over 30 feet tall! Then, to Pia Pia Island for the often spectacular sunset over the flats. Next, to the hotel (completely made of salt) and dinner.

Salar de Uyuni is the highest salt flats in the world with a thickness of 5 to 30 feet. It was formed when an ancient high altitude saline lake dried up. It is part of the greater Puno Altiplano that stretches into Chile and Argentina. The plateau is estimated to hold 75% of the world’s known supply of lithium and Salar de Uyuni is estimated to have 17% of it by itself. The electronics boom has brought relatively high paying jobs to the area, but that comes at an environmental cost – due to the immense amount of water required for extraction and the chemicals used in the evaporation ponds.

What to bring: fully-charged batteries & chargers, camera & any props that you might want for pictures, sunblock, personal medications (including aspirin and motion sickness tablets for altitude or driving), sunglasses, warm clothes because it’ll be in the twenties at night, snacks, towel, toilet paper, any drinks that you might want other than water, sturdy shoes for walking on uneven rough surfaces, sleeping bag (bedding is provided, but some might prefer a sleeping bag), flashlight/headlamp for making your way to the bathrooms in the dark, binoculars if desired.

Tour Itinerary

After heavy rains (usually December through March but possible other times as well) much of the flats, Fish Island and sometimes other locations become too flooded to access. The itinerary will change accordingly, and those changes may not be known until the last minute.

After breakfast, load into vehicles and drive through the desert surrounded by volcanoes, including Ollague. From here, it’s a day of neon-colored lagoons! There are stops for short walks along Hedionda, Chiarkota and Honda lagoons, each unique allowing for incredible photographs of flamingos. Then, across the Siloli desert to the wind-blown eroded rock formations, including Árbol de Piedra (Tree of Rock), and on to Laguna Colorada, a bright red lagoon rimmed with peaks allowing for beautiful reflections.

Lodging: The facilities in this very remote enclave are basic. Most options are dormitory style. However, we utilize “upgraded” accommodations when available. The “upgrades” are significant in that they are private rooms with private bathrooms, but still no showers, and there is no heating, but blankets are provided. Beds are simple but clean. Electricity is available when the generator runs (about three hours a night). Towels are not provided, so you must bring your own. There is no cellular or internet. Accommodation options in the area are very limited and demand is high, so although we will try to book the upgraded accommodations, however they are not guaranteed and dormitory style might be required. If this occurs, no refunds will be given. The only higher-end hotel available would add an extra day to the tour due to the distances involved. This is not an option for this tour, but it could be arranged on a private tour.

Giving back opportunity: There are children who live in the small community where we will be staying and they have very limited resources, so toys and sporting equipment are seen as luxuries. We bring a few of these luxury items along with us and give them to the kids. You can donate toward the purchase of these items and be a part of giving them to the children.

Board the van after a late breakfast and head up through the mountains to Potosí at 13,429 feet (4090 m), one of the highest cities in the world. After an early check-in, you can grab lunch on your own before a tour of the National Mint, acclaimed as one of the best museums in South America. Following the tour, you can spend the rest of the afternoon strolling the colonial streets, taking a tour of the Monastery of Saint Therese, the Covenant of Saint Francis or the Cathedral of the City of Potosí, or just sit and people watch in a park.

The National Mint of Bolivia (Casa de la Moneda de Bolivia) is housed in a beautiful building encompassing an entire city block. This building’s construction was started in 1753, but coins were minted in Potosí for the Spanish since 1572 and at this mint until 1953. Coins from the mint had a mint mark of “P” and were known as potosies. The walls are over a meter thick and the building has served other roles over its life – prison, fortress, and Bolivian army headquarters during the Chaco War. The museum houses many historical treasures from paintings to minting equipment.

Quinoa is native to Bolivia and has been harvested in-country for perhaps 8,000 years, and you will likely see it growing throughout the Altiplano. It was once considered the food of the poor, but has recently become a trendy food worldwide. It is prepared like a grain, but is actually a pseudo-cereal related to spinach, chard and beets. It’s gluten-free and high in protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and contains all nine amino acids. This prompted NASA to state: “While no single food can supply all of the essential life-sustaining nutrients, quinoa comes as close as any other in the plant or animal kingdom”.

After breakfast, it’s on to Cerro Rico mine for a 3.5 hour tour led by an ex-miner. All safety equipment – rubber boots, helmet, waterproof jacket, protective over pants, and electric headlamp provided. There are some inherent risks and not all travelers may choose to join the subterranean tour but opt for a city tour of historical buildings and beautiful viewpoints around the city instead. Then, it’s lunch on your own before heading to Sucre by tour van where we will check in to the hotel for the next two nights.

Cerro Rico (Rich Hill), helped finance all of Spain and is one of the highest producing mines in the world for silver. It is estimated that 8 million Inca slaves died in the mines. It has been continuously mined since 1545 and allowed Potosí’s population to swell to the largest in the New World. By the early 1800s, most of the deposit had been depleted and the city shrank from about 200,000 to only 10,000.

It is still mined by about two dozen small-scale cooperatives for tin, zinc, lead and silver. Each miner buys a small stake in a portion of the mine and works it. Often, several tons of worthless rock must be removed to get enough metal for a small profit. Not much, if any, wealth is created here for the miners and life for them is very hard. Poor working conditions have dropped the average miner’s life expectancy to about 40. Men and boys use hammers and bars to create holes for dynamite and then the debris is removed by wheelbarrows. Miners use acetylene gas headlamps instead of battery powered lamps because they burn out when there is not enough oxygen and warn the miners that they need to get out not to suffocate. Breathing is made even more difficult by the pulverized rock dust in the air and very poor ventilation and temperatures consistently over 100°F. 70+ hour shifts are not uncommon. There are roughly 3,000 children 6 to 16 years old, called peones, working the mine. To learn more watch the documentary Devil’s Miner (2005).

Money - Where can travelers exchange their money to get local currency?

There are currency exchanges throughout many of the major cities and at the airport. Major banks can also do conversions, however they will often refuse to do so unless you have a bank account with them and if they will do it it will usually involve a fee. Traveling solo

Tour prices are based on there being two people in each room. Therefore anyone traveling solo will need to pay a fee, a Single Supplement, for having a private room. There is no additional cost for any other component of the tour and this is in no way a penalty. You can think of it this way, if you and your partner were to get a $100 a night hotel room, it would cost each of you $50. If only you stayed in the same room, you would pay $100. That is exactly what we do when determining a Single Supplement rate, we are simply adding the full cost of the room into the tour price.

What if I am prone to sea or car sickness?

Most itinerary excursions that include traveling by boat can be skipped by guests (the Bolivia Grand and Jungle & Mountains Tours have major boat-based components and are therefore unsuitable for guests wanting to avoid traveling by boat). There are alternative excursions set up in case weather or water conditions prevent the water-based excursion. So, if a guest wanted to skip the components involving boats, they can simply enjoy free time to explore on their own or if sufficient notices given, an alternative itinerary could be set up for them at an additional cost. The enjoyment and comfort of all guests must be considered and if a guest is constantly sick while in vehicles, it can cause other guests to be uncomfortable, and the guest might be asked to leave the tour. It is therefore recommended that someone prone to car sickness look into a Private tour instead of a Public/Joinable tour so that the itinerary can be adjusted to accommodate the guest that is prone to car sickness if required.

Is GBT able to accommodate dietary needs or restrictions?

On tours all breakfasts, some lunches and some dinners are provided. If we know in advance about specific dietary restrictions we can often accommodate them for the meals that we provide. However, strict restrictions requiring absolute separation of ingredients from the source can usually not be accommodated on Joinable tours. However, they can most often be accommodated on Private tours where locations can be specifically selected for the requested diets. In larger cities, there are restaurants and supermarkets that can usually provide food suitable for most diets. accessing those markets including transportation to and from them are the sole responsibility of the guest. Some of the locations that GBT goes to are remote and, therefore, have limited food options. In those instances, guests can prepare by shopping in the larger cities that are visited and we will provide a cooler for the transportation of a modest amount of guest food.

What if a guest's flight is delayed and they are unable to start the tour as scheduled?

There are few if any scheduled events on the first day of an itinerary. That day is considered an arrival day. The following day is usually in the same city as the arrival day. So, it is usually fairly easy to catch up with a tour group if the delay is less than one day. For delays longer than that it becomes more difficult to get a guest caught up with the group and any costs associated with doing so will need to be paid by the guest immediately. There will be no refunds for any part of a tour itinerary missed by a guest, however, it is likely something that would be covered by a good travel insurance policy.

What happens if participants are unable to comply with the vaccination requirements after booking a tour?

There is nothing that GBT can do if you are unable to enter a country due to non-compliance with their entry regulations. How should I choose an insurance policy?

You often get what you pay for and if you get the cheapest insurance you might not actually be covered for your losses. You do not want to find out that your bargain insurance actually doesn’t cover you if you need it. Any insurance can seem like they are courteous and friendly when you are agreeing to give THEM money. The real test of a policy or even a company comes when it is THEY that need to pay YOU for a claim. We recommend that you research the companies and policies with a particular focus on reviews of how they handled claims previously.

    Accomodations
Are room locations and configurations guaranteed?

Since GBT has itineraries in some remote areas, the availability of rooms can sometimes be limited. We do our best to provide accommodations based on the requests of the guests. For instance, some guests that are sharing a room prefer to have separate beds whereas others prefer to have one bed. Similarly, guests might request to have first floor accommodations. The vast majority of the time maintaining those configurations or location requests is no problem. However, sometimes due to increased demand or other factors including construction, the requested configurations or room locations might not be available for all of the nights.

    Bolivia Visa requirements
    Bolivia Visa requirements

Citizens from countries listed on Group 2 may obtain a visa for Bolivia valid for 30 days from their nearest Bolivian consulate – some of which offer online applications. Under some circumstances you can request a tourist Visa at the airport or at the Bolivian border, however it’s recommended that travelers not rely on this option. Depending on which country you are from, there can be a fee, usually around $55 US (see below for US citizen prices).

Once in the country, the visa is extendable by request for a further 60 days; continuous or discontinuous in the period of 1 year. You can renew your visa by visiting an immigration office in Bolivia (not including immigration offices at border crossings). A 30 day extension costs around $30 US.

When applying for a tourist Visa you will be required to present the following documents:

    • A visa application form completed and signed
    • Passport with six months of validity until expiration
    • A printed copy of yellow fever vaccination (front and back)
    • Proof of onward travel – if you don’t have a round trip or onward ticket out of Bolivia (for example if you’re traveling by bus), you may wish to purchase a flight or bus ticket out of the country in advance to use as proof
    • Evidence of funds or printed copy of bank statement (3 months worth)
    • A printed hotel reservation or written invitation in Spanish from friends or relatives in Bolivia
    • A 4cm X 4cm or passport sized photo

Though in practice you are unlikely to be asked for all of these documents if applying for your visa at the border (most likely you will only need to show your passport, yellow fever certificate and pay the fee), it is a requirement of the Bolivian government, so you may wish to have this information handy just in case.

For US citizens, a tourist visa can be obtained for $160 US in cash using the same procedures as Group 2. This visa fee is called a ‘reciprocity fee’ as it is the same amount that citizens of Bolivia are charged to visit the United States. Note that paying the visa fee when entering Bolivia exempts you from paying any exit fees. If paying the fee at the Bolivian border/airport make sure you have freshly minted US dollars as no marked bills nor credit cards will be accepted.

US tourist visas are valid for 10 years from the date of issue with a stay of 30 days for the purpose of tourism that does not include conducting any sort of paid or for-profit activity. US tourists may extend their 30 day stay up to a 90 day stay through the Bolivian immigration offices. The maximum period of stay for tourists is 90 days per calendar year. The additional periods can be consecutive or non-consecutive within a 1 year period. A US tourist visa holder will only be able to use the visa for up to 3 trips per year.

As visa and other entry and exit conditions can change at short notice, you should contact your country’s nearest Embassy or Bolivia consulate for the most up to date information before making your trip to Bolivia.

Please Note: According to the US Embassy, as of May 2015, US citizens visiting Bolivia as tourists should obtain an entry visa prior to travel. While a number of US passengers in the past have been successful in purchasing a visa upon arrival at La Paz and Santa Cruz airports as well as Bolivian land borders, recently there have been a number of cases where tourists have been refused entry for not having a visa on arrival. Unfortunately, there is no clear reason as to why some are let in and others refused, it’s just something to be aware of so you can make an informed decision. Better to be safe than sorry, we recommend organising your visa prior to traveling to Bolivia.

If you lose your passport after receiving the Visa you will need to purchase another visa to be allowed to exit Bolivia (only for visas received on entry not for those received at the consulate).

We recommend not cutting it close in regards to the expiration date of your passport.

It is recommended to have two blank pages available in the passport to accommodate the entry and exit visas.
